The Professional Learning Committee is excited to be able to offer this new benefit to members of FCCAM.
Through a grant from Maine Roads to Quality, in support of our Professional Learning work, FCCAM will be bringing more free training opportunities to our members. The PLC is building these training opportunities to support the continual growth of family child care professionals in Maine.
Children’s Book Discussion Group
2nd Thursday of the month starting in March
6:30 pm to 8:30 pm
A bit about this new monthly online book discussion group…
“Meet” with us online, through Zoom, to discuss ways to use specific children’s books and activities to expand their learning.
It is the PLC’s hope that you can attend these monthly discussions, leaving each time with more resources and activities to use in your program. While each provider’s program is unique and they approach their teaching in different ways, we oftentimes are using the same stories and materials! Join us to share: your favorite activities for the books discussed, adaptations you make for your different ages, and specifically, review about that month’s specific book.
The Children’s Book Discussion Group will be open to anyone who provides child care. There will be 2 professional hours, accepted by licensing, awarded for participation in the monthly call.
These monthly discussion groups are FREE for FCCAM members and $5 for non-members. As an additional benefit for FCCAM members, some of the books to be discussed will be supplied to you for FREE.
The book for our March 14th discussion is ~ Swirl by Swirl: Spirals in Nature by Joyce Sidman
We strongly encourage you to share the book with your children before the group discussion. Think about:
– their responses to the book
– questions it generated for both you and them
– activities the book initiated in your program
– future activities you think would build off this book
– What activity can you see doing, but would like some additional resources to support it?
– What developmental standards can activities around this book cover?
The activities and resources shared in the meeting will be compiled by the PLC and shared with all participants.
Participants will join each monthly discussion by registering online. Use this link to register for the first meeting on March 14th.
Future monthly registration links will be available in the top menu under Book Discussion Groups.
We truly hope you are able to join some, if not all, of the monthly discussions.
We will be using Zoom to provide a strong interactive experience for the Discussion Group participants. If you are not familiar with Zoom meetings, we are happy to assist you. Zoom is usable on computers, tablets, smartphones and by landline. You can find some simple tutorials on FCCAM’s website in the Tech Tool Help section. You can also email us at: firstname.lastname@example.org and we can arrange a trial run, or just answer additional questions.
